Presentation on the ITSMF Germany Conference in Darmstadt (8.12.2010)

I had the pleasure  to talk about Configuration Management in the Darmstadtium.  (http://www.itsmf.de/kongress2010.html). The title of my presentation was “How to make your configuration management fit for the future” and I covered  ”Five areas where one can improve your configuration management”. The audience was great and the discussions were lively.

When implementing a configuration management system you usually start with the following steps:

  • What is expected? submitted requirements catalogue has to be available 
  • Establish roles and responsibles
  • Define measurement system (KPIs to control Critical Success Factors)
  • Strong and stable CMS Architecture and Design (including Metamodel)
  • Create standard configuration management processes (samples see here:  www.dis.ch/blog/index)
  • Determine CI-/ CI-Relation scope needed to meet customer requirements

Best Practices for Configuration Management and Planning

The Configuration Management and Planning process is absolutely essential when starting with Configuration Management. It ensures that the whole foundation of your Configuration Management is well tought out and your Configuration Management System is sustainably built. It is usually executed only once in full detail and then only updated when extending your CMS (e.g. with new CIs /  new CI-Classes (Types) / new CI-Relations ).

Experience has shown that the importance of this process cannot be stressed enough. If this process is not given its full due attention, the risk of following an aimless CoM course – with consequential financial impact – is extremely high. (more…)
